Raise Your Hand Texas Leadership Program:
The Principals’ Center, Harvard Graduate School of Education
The 2009 Raise Your Hand Texas Leadership Program will send over 100 of our top public and charter school campus leaders to The Principals’ Center, Harvard Graduate School of Education to participate in one of five Summer Institutes. The Summer Institutes will expose our principals to leading national and international experts in the fields of education and leadership. In addition, our school leaders will work with renowned educators from across the country.
Applications dates: March 3, 2009 to April 3, 2009.

Eligibility Requirements:
- Applicants must be a current Texas public or charter school principal.
- Assistant or associate principals are not eligible.
- Applicants who are not currently in a principal position but who are seeking a principal position are ineligible to apply. However, if you are not currently a principal but have secured a principal position for the coming school year you are eligible to apply. We require a letter from your Superintendent indicating that you’ve been offered a position as a principal for the 2009-2010 school year. The letter may be mailed to:

- If you attended The Principals’ Center, Harvard Graduate School of Education through Raise Your Hand Texas in 2008 you are ineligible to reapply at this time.
- Applicants who apply directly to The Principals’ Center, Harvard Graduate School of Education will not be eligible to attend through Raise Your Hand Texas.
- If you attended The Principals’ Center, Harvard Graduate School of Education previously through an organization other than Raise Your Hand Texas you may apply.
Application Instructions:
- Applications will be available on the Raise Your Hand Texas website starting Tuesday, March 3, 2009.
- Applications must be completed and submitted (in their entirety) by Friday, April 3, 2009.
- Do not apply directly to The Principals’ Center, Harvard Graduate School of Education unless you intend to pay for the Harvard Graduate School of Education. You must complete the application through the link on the RYHT website.
- You must complete all required fields on the application.
- You may apply once, under one name.
- You must provide correct and accurate information.
- You must submit a letter from your Superintendent stating that you are in good standing with your school district. The letter may be mailed to:

Selection Process:
- Applications will be available on the Raise Your Hand Texas website starting March 3, 2009.
- Application deadline is April 3, 2009.
- Over one-hundred participants will be selected to participate from throughout Texas.
- You will be notified via email and mail. We recommend you unblock spam filters so you can receive email from Raise Your Hand Texas.
- If you are selected, Raise Your Hand Texas will provide travel, hotel stay, tuition, and a modest discretionary spending fund.
- We encourage participants to submit blog entries and photographs from their Harvard experience.
- Applicants will be able to indicate their first through third choice in attending one of the following programs at Harvard:

Redesigning High Schools for Improved Instruction
June 29-July 3, 2009
High school educators explore why many high schools need rethinking. The institute examines the structural, cultural, and instructional changes necessary for improvement. Participants examine models for redesign, hear from successful practitioners, and leave with tools and strategies to implement their own action plans.
Charter Schools
July 20-23, 2009
With more than 3,500 schools enrolling over a million students, charter schools are significantly changing the face of public education. This institute considers a variety of issues related to charter school successes and struggles – exploring curriculum, leadership, performance, finance, and governance.
Improving Schools: The Art of Leadership
June 29-July 7, 2009
Today’s school leaders struggle to balance their roles as instructional leaders with the many other demands of the job. Designed for principals in the early stages of their careers, the institute provides strategies and guidance on how to manage change, build a base of support, and implement curriculum innovation.
Leadership: An Evolving Vision
July 8-15, 2009
The institute is designed for experienced principals looking to refine their leadership skills and revitalize their personal vision of educational excellence. Examine the components of a good school and learn how to enhance the quality of the school experience for everyone.
National Institute for Urban School Leaders
July 19-24, 2009
This institute is designed for school leaders and teams charged with creating more effective urban schools. Participants examine schools in relation to the community – exploring race, culture, equity, and social justice in today’s diverse urban classrooms. The institute focuses on developing the leadership skills necessary for improving teaching and learning, and gaining community support.
