Job Title: Media Relations Associate
Department: Marketing (marketing, creative, branding, communications, digital, public affairs)
Location: Flexible — headquarters is in Austin, but this position will support efforts across the state and involves significant in-state travel, so living remotely is an option.
Reports to: Vice President of Marketing, Petri Darby, APR, with dotted line to Vice President of Policy and Advocacy, Dr. Michelle Smith. The Marketing team serves in part as an in-house agency supporting the creative, communications, and branding needs and interests of the Policy and Programs teams, as well as working to shift the narrative surrounding public education. While the Vice President of Marketing will serve as the Media Relations Associate’s primary supervisor, the Vice President of Policy and Advocacy will direct the Media Relations Associate’s primary regional and campaign focus.

The Role:

Raise Your Hand Texas, a non-profit, non-partisan public education advocacy organization, seeks a Media Relations Associate to handle targeted media relations, regional advocacy communications, and policy campaign content support. This position will be responsible for media engagement to support the efforts of more than a dozen regional advocacy directors in key markets across the state — this new and growing advocacy team is responsible for building a robust pro-public education constituency across Texas. The Media Relations Associate also will be responsible for media outreach efforts to support the organization’s legislative interests and statewide media relations promoting the organization’s work and the work of innovative educators and school leaders across the state to help reframe the conversation around the importance and impact of public schools.

The perfect candidate will be an accomplished communications strategist, media tactician, and writer. The person in this role must know how to establish and build strong relationships with the media, position an organization as a trusted and primary resource for relevant topics, create media materials and other content, and gain significant earned media coverage.


Public Relations

Build Raise Your Hand Texas into a respected and authoritative news media resource — sometimes with our team serving as spokespeople, sometimes positioning others — for hard news, thought leadership, and compelling feature stories surrounding broad public education issues, our programs, and our strategic policy interests.

  • Develop targeted media lists based on key markets, stakeholder groups, and
  • Build and cultivate strong media relationships
  • Craft media materials and story pitches and pitch stories to print, broadcast, and digital outlets
  • Position Raise Your Hand team members as thought leaders and media
  • Secure op-ed, guest column, and authored article opportunities
  • Write and edit news releases, op-eds, columns, and authored articles
  • Monitor and distribute relevant news clips
  • Analyze results of PR programs
  • Executive communications and training/preparation for media interviews and editorial board meetings

Advocacy and Policy Campaign Content

  • Help identify strategic content opportunities and work with the Marketing and Policy teams to create multimedia content for regional advocacy directors, as well as for the organization’s website, blog, social media presences, and other channels as needed

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree preferred
  • Written and spoken fluency in Spanish strongly desired
  • 10+ years of work experience and/or training in public affairs, public relations, civic engagement, politics
  • Experience at a public relations, public affairs, advertising, or marketing agency, a non-profit or education organization, or in-house corporate PR or public affairs department
  • Strong internal motivation to work to further educational equity and excellence in Texas
  • Exceptional writing, oral, listening, and communication skills
  • Strong collaboration skills
  • Excellent judgment
  • Familiarity with the Texas political and educational landscape
  • Established relationships with Texas media
  • Experience with media database and monitoring platforms
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Microsoft Powerpoint, and G Suite
  • Strong project management skills

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Photography, videography, video editing, podcasting experience helpful, but not necessary
  • Familiarity with Salesforce, Dropbox, Asana, and digital grassroots advocacy tools helpful, but not necessary
