Position Description

The Policy and Programs Research Fellow will conduct research on topics related to improving education in Texas and assist with policy and programmatic initiatives. The fellow will join a fast-paced team focused on providing policy expertise and implementing solutions to improve public education in Texas.

Responsibilities

  • Provide staff with support in research and analysis of various topics, organizations and key players in the field, as requested. Topics may include federal and state K-12 policy, Pre-K, school funding, and governance.
  • Assist members of the Raise Your Hand Texas policy and program staff with initiatives, program implementation, and events.
  • Interact with stakeholders, including legislative staff,  educators, and employees of education associations.
  • Assist with the creation of policy materials for the upcoming legislative session.
  • Provide support on short- and long-term projects.
  • Create and update online databases.

Qualifications

  • Current graduate student in an education or journalism-related field.
  • Alignment with the core beliefs and mission of Raise Your Hand Texas.
  • Familiarity with, and commitment to improving, the Texas K-12 public school system.
  • Access and familiarity with education-related research databases.
  • Excellent organizational and computer skills, including Excel and Google suite.
  • Exceptionally strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
  • Authorized to work in the United States.
  • Based in Austin.
  • Some paid travel may be requested, depending upon the fellow’s schedule.

Application Instructions

The position is available for up to 20 hours per week, dependent upon the fellow’s schedule, at a rate of $20/ hour. The position is initially offered for the remainder of the year and spring semester, with the possibility of continuation.
