Paul Covey is the principal of Valle Verde Early College High School in the Ysleta Independent School District in El Paso, Texas. In 2014 and 2015, US News and World Report ranked Valle Verde as one the top American High Schools and Newsweek ranked it as one of the top US high schools serving low-income students. Under Covey’s leadership, Valle Verde ECHS has been recognized as an Exemplary Campus by the Texas Education Agency (TEA) every year since it opened and recently earned the highest marks possible under the new TEA accountability system.
Mr. Covey has served as an invited speaker and panel discussion member for various presentations on technology integration and early college high school initiatives. Now in his 25th year as an educator, his experience includes serving as a principal, assistant principal, student activities director, and government/economics teacher in the secondary education setting. While principal of Hillcrest Middle School, he successfully oversaw West Texas’ first and only school-wide one-to-one laptop initiative and served on the state board of the Texas Middle School Association.
Mr. Covey earned his B.S. in Education and B.A. in the Plan II Honors Program at the University of Texas at Austin and his M.Ed. in Educational Administration at the University of Texas at El Paso. He has also completed two Principal Institute programs at Harvard University and served as facilitator in 2014 and 2015.
