Tribune Festival: Public Education

September 30, 2013 |

Raise Your Hand Texas Grassroots Ambassadors Laura Ewing and Casie Wenmohs and CEO David Anthony at Texas Tribune Festival.

Raise Your Hand Texas was proud to sponsor the Texas Tribune Festival at the University of Texas at Austin. This innovative, three-day event featured 150 speakers discussing critical issues that affect all Texans.

The public education track included four separate panels: Early Childhood Education, The Fight Over Charter Schools, Innovations in Teaching and Public Education Reform. Raise Your Hand Texas was right in the thick of things, engaging with attendees and speakers by providing information about our grassroots program and sharing our advocacy efforts. Thank you to everyone who visited our booth.

The panels featured public and higher education committee members, such as Rep. Diane Patrick, Rep. Mike Villarreal and Rep. Dan Huberty. TEA Commissioner Michael Williams also participated in the discussion. Other speakers included education advocates Pat Wasley (CEO of the Teaching Channel), Rod Paige (Former U.S. Secretary of Education) and Mike Feinberg (Co-Founder of KIPP).

In addition to these public education panels, one-to-one interviews were also held for high profile legislators who are, confirmed or rumored to be, seeking higher office. Education is shaping up to be the hot button issue in 2015 and is sure to be a key component of every candidate’s platform. Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst and Sen. Wendy Davis both weighed in on the current state of Texas education and shared their ideas for the future.

We are pleased to inform you that Brian Hill, Assistant Principal at Zilker Elementary and winner of our Tribune Festival ticket giveaway on Twitter, will be providing a more in-depth blog post on his experiences at the festival. It was a pleasure meeting Brian and his colleagues at the event. Look for his recap on the site!

Thank you to the Texas Tribune for hosting such a well-organized, informative event. We learned quite a bit from these distinguished speakers. If you were unable to attend, follow @RYHTexas to see our live tweets and visit the Texas Tribune for video from the Festival.
