    Position Description

    The Policy Research Fellow will join a fast-paced team focused on providing policy expertise and implementing solutions to improve public education in Texas. The fellow will conduct research and assist the Raise Your Hand policy team in the development of our 2021 legislative agenda. The fellow may also assist with the development of an education policy podcast.

    Responsibilities:

    • Provide staff with research support and analysis of various topics, organizations and key players in the field, as requested. Topics may include federal and state K-12 policy, Pre-K, school funding, and governance.
    • Assist in the development and production of a podcast.
    • Assist with the creation of policy materials for the 2021 legislative session.
    • Assist members of the Raise Your Hand Texas policy and program staff with initiatives, program implementation, and events.
    • Interact with stakeholders, including legislative staff,  educators, and employees of education associations.
    • Provide support for short- and long-term projects.
    • Create and update online databases.

    Qualifications:

    • Current undergraduate or graduate student in an education, public policy, or journalism-related field.
    • Self-motivated, goal-oriented, and a team player.
    • Alignment with the core beliefs and mission of Raise Your Hand Texas.
    • Familiarity with, and commitment to improving, the Texas K-12 public school system.
    • Access and familiarity with education-related research databases.
    • Excellent organizational and computer skills, including Excel, and Google suite. Familiarity with the Adobe Audition is preferred but not required.
    • Exceptionally strong written and verbal communication skills.
    • Strong critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
    • Authorized to work in the United States.
    • Based in Austin.
    • Some paid travel may be requested, depending upon the fellow’s schedule.

    Application Instructions:

    The position is available for up to 20 hours per week, dependent upon the fellow’s schedule, at a rate of $20/hour. The position is initially offered for the remainder of the year and spring semester, with the possibility of continuation.
