A survey of more than 15,600 Texans found that 83% opposed grading schools solely on STAAR scores, and 69% said the test doesn’t accurately reflect student learning, yet during the 89th Legislative Session, HB 4, which would have replaced STAAR exams, did not make it across the finish line.
“When we’re held accountable, we need the most valid data possible. Without valid data, an accountability system doesn’t serve its purpose,” said Jeni Neatherlin, @huttoisd Superintendent. “While no system is perfect, there’s broad agreement that the STAAR test isn’t the only measure. We would have loved to see a local accountability system that reflects the values of our community and highlights the areas they find most important for student success.”

"The STAAR test doesn’t reflect the full scope of what schools do, so it’s not an accurate measure of true accountability,” @dentonisd General Counsel Dr. Deron Robinson said. “In Denton ISD, we define success not just by academic outcomes but also by how well we engage students and the community. We want students to be life-ready, and HB 4 recognized that by broadening accountability to include things like extracurriculars and real-world readiness, not just one test.”
