Assessment and accountability shape nearly every major decision Texas schools make, but the system is often misunderstood. This course explains how student testing works in Texas, starting with STAAR, and how the state is transitioning to a new assessment system. You will learn what the tests are designed to measure, how results are reported and why changes to testing matter for students, teachers and campuses.

The course then walks through how assessment results feed into the A-F accountability rating system. We explain what goes into the ratings, how campuses and districts are evaluated and why test scores still carry so much weight. You will see how accountability rules influence curriculum, staffing, interventions and even school closures.

By the end, you will understand how assessment and accountability connect to real-world consequences for schools and communities. More importantly, you will be equipped to question whether the system is measuring what truly matters and to advocate for accountability policies that support student learning rather than distort it.
