Rachel Omerza

Hometown: Empire, Michigan
University: Rice University
Teaching Interest: High School Biology

Rachel’s career change from environmental science and consulting into teaching was rooted in one primary thing, seeking an opportunity to make a difference in the world. She recognizes that today’s students are tomorrow’s leaders, and she wants to ensure that these future leaders are informed, lifelong learners.

Rachel is passionate about connecting her biology lessons to everyday life and enabling students to make connections about how natural systems operate in the real world. Rachel believes many of the issues society faces today are directly related to humans’ relationship with our global ecosystem. Ultimately, she hopes that her students remember her as a compassionate educator, but also as someone who never accepted substandard work.

"As a science teacher, I will have the opportunity to educate my students about the challenges that their generation is likely to face—such as the increasingly present effects of global climate change—and equip them with the tools they will need to develop innovative solutions to address these challenges."
